Real Personal Growth or Personal Entertainment?

The Difference Between Personal Growth and Personal Growth Entertainment

Hi Reader,

I recently had several conversations about Mel Robbins' new book, The Let Them Theory, which sparked some deep reflections on the nature of personal development and our society's obsession with pop psychology.

I realized why the book (and Mel Robbins) get under my skin at times.

We’re living in a time where social media feeds us bite-sized pieces of wisdom:

“Just set boundaries!”
“Let go of control!”
“Love yourself!”

Listen, I also post this stuff.

These ideas sound great on paper (or Instagram), but as someone who has spent decades in the trenches of my own inner work and guides professionals through transformative personal and professional growth that's sustainable, I know one thing for certain:

True growth isn’t a sound bite. It’s not a viral video. It’s messy, uncomfortable, has ups and downs, and is rarely glamorous.

It’s tempting to consume pop-psychology content and feel like that “aha!” moment is enough to spark lasting change. And maybe we do try out some new practices for a week or two.

But meaningful transformation happens when we sit with the discomfort, unravel years of ingrained patterns, and do the actual work—slowly, intentionally, and often subtly.

Why Pop Psychology Doesn’t Work for the Long Term

Pop psychology thrives on quick hits of inspiration, catchy slogans, and surface-level advice. While it can feel motivating in the moment, it often fails to create lasting change for a few key reasons:

  1. Lacks Depth: Pop psychology rarely addresses the root causes of behaviors or thought patterns, which are often deeply embedded in past experiences and emotional triggers. If it does, it
  2. Overlooks the Process: Sustainable growth takes time, practice, and repeated effort—things that don’t fit neatly into a 30-second social media reel.
  3. Ignores Individuality: One-size-fits-all advice may sound universal, but true transformation often requires personalized approaches tailored to your unique experiences and challenges.
  4. Fails to Build Emotional Resilience: Long-term growth requires learning how to navigate discomfort, setbacks, and uncertainty—things that can’t be bypassed by motivational sound bites.

In my work with folks, I see this all the time. My clients come in ready to address challenges, but real change often happens without them even noticing it at first. Through decades of experience, I’ve refined an approach where I reveal insights and guide shifts in a way that feels seamless—but the results are profound and, most importantly, sustainable.

Most people don't even realize it's happening. Their lives start to look different and they show up differently in situations.

That's the result of real, meaningful inner work.

Why? Because when growth happens subtly and naturally over time, it sticks. It’s not about a passing conversation or a fleeting motivational mantra. It’s about embedding change deeply enough that it transforms how you show up in life and work.

Final Thoughts

Personal growth doesn’t need to be loud or dramatic. It often happens subtly and sustainably when we commit to ongoing, thoughtful work. That’s where true transformation lives—far beyond the catchy slogans of pop psychology.

Keep striving for growth that lasts Reader. And remember, you already know the value of dedication and precision from your work—apply that same mindset to your personal and professional development.

What’s your experience with balancing sound-bite wisdom versus true, lasting growth?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

My Second Fave Piece of Advice Oh hey there Reader, If you’re on more than one email list about personal & biz development, you’ve probably heard everyone’s “top” advice. Which is actually usually 35 conflicting pieces of advice. But, OK, let's say there's a fairly consistent one. Which is usually something like... "Stop caring what everyone else thinks and go for what you want." So easy, right?! Nah... BUT, yes! That is my top piece of advice, too. I've spent most of my life (and still part...

Oh Hi! (and a pic) Hi Reader, ^^^ That’s me in my workspace. ^^^ (yes, I got bangs, no, I’m not having a spiritual crisis). I’m sharing because I just wanted to give you a lil’ glimpse into what it’s like to run Courage & Joy at Work, creating content and do this kind of work with folx. I spent several hours and a few re-iterations depending on my current vibe creating the space. I have some stones, crystals, candles, trinkets, my go-to reading resources, sage, and a sound bowl. I also have...
